What Are Amalgam Fillings?
Dental amalgam—commonly known as “silver fillings”—is a metal mixture that contains about 50% mercury, combined with silver, tin, and copper. It’s been used in dentistry for generations because it’s durable and inexpensive. But with time and research, we’ve come to understand the bigger picture.
Why We’ve Stopped Placing Amalgam
At Van Hemert Family Dentistry, we no longer place mercury-containing fillings.
Here’s why:
1. Mercury Exposure
Mercury is a known neurotoxin. Even though dental organizations still allow its use, we believe in choosing the least toxic option for our patients whenever possible.
2. Whole-Body Health Approach
We believe oral health impacts overall health. Mercury exposure can affect people differently, especially those with chronic illness, autoimmune issues, or compromised detox pathways.
3. Superior Alternatives Exist
Modern composite and ceramic materials are strong, aesthetic, and mercury-free. They bond beautifully to tooth structure and allow us to preserve more of your natural tooth.
4. Environmental Ethics
Mercury is classified as a hazardous material. We take seriously our responsibility to reduce environmental contamination and protect our patients and staff.
Safe Amalgam Removal: What We Do Differently
Removing amalgam fillings improperly can expose both patient and provider to mercury vapor and particles. That’s why we follow a mercury-safe removal protocol based on SMART techniques.
Here’s what we do:
- High-volume evacuation (HVE) to capture mercury vapor
- Rubber dam isolation to prevent ingestion
- External air suction (DentAirVac-style)
- REME HALO air purification system
- Amalgam separator to keep mercury out of our water supply
- Charcoal masks and protective eyewear for all team members
- Proper disposal of all mercury waste
Common Questions
“Should I remove all my silver fillings?”
That depends. If they’re intact and not causing symptoms, we may monitor them. But if they’re cracked, failing, or you simply want them out—we can safely remove them one at a time or over time.
“Is safe removal covered by insurance?”
Often, insurance only covers standard removal, not the additional protective measures we take. Because of the time, equipment, and protocols involved, we do charge a mercury-safe removal fee for this service. We’ll always walk you through the costs beforehand.
“Do I need to detox after removal?”
That’s a personal choice. Some patients work with a functional medicine provider or naturopath to support detox pathways. We’re happy to collaborate and offer suggestions if desired.
You Deserve Choices—and Protection
We don’t take removing mercury lightly—and we believe our patients deserve the best care available. Our commitment is to whole-body dentistry that protects, informs, and empowers.
We’re here for the conversation—and to walk with you every step of the way.
